Good !

I went there in September 2023 and it was good. We were both happy about the food. Portions could be a bit more generous. The staff was friendly. It's expensive however.

Perfect rainy brunch

The treetop feel from The Ravens is so cozy and beautiful-especially on a rainy day. The strawberry scone we ate was warm and scrumptious and we both enjoyed our main brunch foods as well (I ordered the vegelicious breakfast burrito while my husband enjoyed the elegant and tasty portobello Benedict. This is a super cool spot and we will definitely return on our next Mendocino visit.

We come here every year

We come to the Stanford inn for a long weekend every year with our pups. We love it here. So relaxing and the best food. The trip we just got home from had the best food yet! Don’t miss this! They have a beautiful property, amazing rooms, great service and tasty food. We love that they are pet friendly and they also have a beautiful pool and spa on property in a greenhouse. Can’t beat the Stanford inn.

The Stanford Inn by the Sea Is Not for Me

I have been wanting to stay here for years, so perhaps my expectations were too high, but I was disappointed. The inn is listed as vegan, so I assumed everything would be vegan. Upon entering the lobby, I immediately saw a brochure promoting an "African Wildlife Conservation Center" that breeds antelope, giraffes, and zebras. There are wool hats and mother-of-pearl jewelry for sale. There are non-vegan beverages available in Ravens Restaurant (read my separate review).

We were delighted to find two chocolate chip cookies upon entering our room. The room was clean and a decent size, but the bathroom was somewhat small. The shower had very poor water pressure, but I appreciated the refillable shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner instead of disposable travel-size bottles often found in hotels. However, after discovering non-vegan items in the lobby and restaurant, I wonder if the toiletries are vegan. The lotion had a strong fragrance I did not like. The towels were very plush. The fireplace with complimentary wood was a nice amenity. The king-size bed was comfortable, but the pillows were way too soft for someone who sleeps on their side. My partner and I were both abruptly awoken by the sound of an animal in the wall. Even though the inn does not advertise as an "eco-resort," I was surprised to see disposable Keurig coffee pods in the room. Overall, I'm glad I finally visited, but I would not stay here again, especially for the cost.

Pros: allows companion animals, in-room fireplace, refillable toiletries

Cons: not entirely vegan, expensive

Thank you. I saw this in VegNews (certain it was a paid ad) and was curious if it was vegan, after getting tired of digging around on their site without it being on their FAQ, I came here knowing someone would've said something if it wasn't, thanks for your transparency 💯

Expected so much more

I’ve been here before and I know how delicious this food used to be. This time, while the stay was otherwise fine, the food at Ravens was an utter disappointment. Overcooked rice in the risotto while somehow the alcohol from the wine not cooked out; gritty polenta that was strangely sweet; turmeric overload in the tofu scramble, which is the same as the “seasoned tofu” AND the same as the filling for the crepe…what happened? I wanted it to be so much better…won’t be coming back unless there’s a drastic change in the kitchen.

rent the canoe

The highlight of our stay here was the canoe trip on the Big River. We were alone on the river most of the time, we saw lots of birds, and a playful seal swam around and under our canoe. The canoes are easy for beginners and some have a dog seat.

Our room was pleasant, with a working fireplace and a balcony view of the gardens and a little bit of ocean. The pool, hot tub, massage, and free bike rental were great, and the staff were all very friendly and helpful.

Pros: canoes!, bikes!, pool!

Cons: pricey

A Must Vegan B&B Getaway

How often can you treat yourself like royalty? We have been to Stanford Inn by the Sea twice for birthday celebrations. From the kind and helpful staff to the beautiful and spacious rooms, we felt pampered and welcomed family members!!
The well manicured grounds are lovely! And I can't say enough about the delicious large breakfasts! The Ravens restaurant is all vegan!!
I will always recommend Stanford Inn by the Sea!

Good but overpriced

Staying in an all-vegan resort is a luxury. The area is beautiful (don't miss Mendocino Headlands State Park). The food at The Ravens Restaurant is good. The massages are great and the garden has really cool plants and flowers. Rent a canoe on the Big River -- lovely even if you don't find any river otters or harbor seals (and awesome if you do). Our room had a deck with a beautiful view.
Co-owner/founder Joan Stanford is fun, kind, and accommodating.
For $450 per night (plus tax), however, I expect more. The room was not as nice as other places that cost a fraction as much. For example, the bathroom is out of date and unventilated. I expect enough outlets that work and are dry (not on the sink) and accessible to charge at least the phones and smart watches of two people. OTOH, that price included breakfast, pool and hot tub access, yoga, and free mountain bike rentals.
The restaurant was also somewhat overpriced. Entrees are around $25-36. Good food, slow and problematic service: one server acted as though I were invisible (just one example: he presented the dessert menu and the dessert itself to my husband only, even though I had ordered it and said we were sharing it); and almost every meal, at the restaurant or in the room, included a significant error (e.g., omitting the tofu from the Thai Red Curry and serving only the vegetables). OTOH, all errors were corrected, room service was always prompt, and they say they are understaffed due to COVID.
Re the apparently sexist server, I called the front desk later to ask whether it would be possible not to be seated in a certain server's area in the future. I didn't say which server or why. I was told that it is hard to hire staff right now and they consider themselves lucky to have everyone they have. The rep didn't ask what the problem was or offer a solution.
We didn't bring dogs, but we encountered other guests retrieving their dog from their car. They said they were required to put the dog in the car when they went to the pool/hot tub. If that is true, it's inexcusable to mandate leaving dogs alone in cars. I hope they were misinformed.
The lobby gift shop featured pearl and mother-of-pearl jewelry.
We had a great vacation, but didn't quite feel that we were getting what we paid for.

Perfect vegan resort getaway

Visited during the fall of the 2020 pandemic and, even with reduced services, the Inn provides a relaxing, eco-friendly experience. While my partner and I did not get to eat in Raven due to COVID restrictions, the Inn brought all meals to your door and the food was really excellent. It had a heavy Mexican influence, with some standout players like the Caesar salad. Daily breakfast was also excellent, particularly the muffins.

Of the things you could still do at the resort, the pool was open on a reservation basis only. While these filled up fast, it was pretty excellent having the pool all to yourself for 45 min. Also available were the complimentary mountain bikes and canoeing (from the company that operates on-site).

Pros: Excellent vegan food, Cozy rooms, Beautiful outdoors at your fingertips

Cons: A bit of a crazy route to get there from SF

Vegan Restaurant and Organic Rooms!

It is difficult to find a business that has a hotel and restaurant that adhears to vegan principles and the healing of the planet and helping animals. This is a place to visit and to enjoy and to relax.

Peaceful and serene

We enjoyed our experience and found it beautiful, relaxing, and lovely. The vegan breakfast included in the room fare is such a great convenience! Delicious too!

Pros: All vegan food , Stanford Inn refillable soap/shampoo products, Delicious chocolate chip cookies

Cons: Well water is chlorinated and has an awful taste, toy horses for riding in lobby (for kids only), Wish they offered oat milk

Heaven for Plant Eaters

We are 3 days into a 5 night stay and love it here. Amazing food. Highly recommend the afternoon tea. The dinners are fantastic and breakfast is satisfying in a way I usually don't get unless I'm cooking at home. Had a wonderful cooking class. The gardens are great. Really everything is awesome. Nutrition class with Sid Garza Hillman is well worth it

Pros: great food, nice environment , great people.

Cons: can be pricey but we think worth it

Mixed interests.

I recently stayed here for several days. There are mixed interests at this inn that are in conflict with a simple, healthy, vibrant and peaceful vegan lifestyle. This inn is surely in a lovely location with a peek-a-boo view of the ocean and near so many nature parks with an abundance of wildlife like deer, dozens of species of birds, seals, whales, and snakes—all of these creatures I saw myself while here. When I drove through the entrance of the inn I was confronted with the sight of horses and lamas in grassless corals and when I entered the inn, I was surrounded by dogs (some resembling and sounding like squeaky stuffed animals) on tethers and chains. It was explained to me that the horses and lamas were "rescued" and now pets of the owners and on his private property. I then went to my room and straight ahead were two large cookies and straight ahead of that was a large flat screened tv. At this point I was just taking it all in. I then took a walk out into the organic gardens and in the middle was a caged in area with two geese that had there wings clipped. At this point my heart sank and a question arose: Would I rather live 50 years wild and free, or would I rather be tamed and subdued for anothers use and have my arms clipped off and live for 100? Birth and death is a beautiful part of the experience of being human. We shun death of the body and project out our fears on other beings (and this leads many to eat them). This clearly showed at this inn; in the living room there were three old wooden horses that children could ride on. Ironically, in my room was a novel called "Zoo"; a fictional story about wild animals taking over the world. Is this expensive inn a demonstration for the good will of all beings, and joyous, harmonious human stewardship of this blessed earth, or is it simply another road to the bank? Where is this ship headed?

Loved Literally Everything (Best Massage Ever)

Literally everything about this place is great. From the big items (the whole place is vegan) to the small human touches. There were fresh cookies every morning and they are GOOD.
They had sweet potato treats for our dog waiting in the room.

The food is out of this world good and tea time everyday is so charming and comes with a delicious baked good.

The rooms are so nice, charming and have lovely fireplaces and balconies.

We also got the best massages of our lives from an adorable, tiny woman.

Can't wait to get back here.

Just wonderful!

Incredibly beautiful resort embedded in an amazing landscape. Staff is very friendly and the vegan food is exceptional. Especially the complimentary afternoon cakes are fantastic - probably the best we've ever had.

Wonderful experience

My wife & I stayed at the Stanford Inn for two nights, and had a wonderful experience. The food was amazing - breakfast & afternoon tea is included in the room rate and both were delicious. The breakfast deserves special mention - AMAZING! Other than that, the accommodation was extremely nice (we stayed in the collage near the friendly rescued farm animals) and the nearby town of Mendocino is oozing with charm. Bikes are free of charge, and there are lots of opportunities to explore the town and nearby wilderness by peddle power. Al in all a wonderful experience. We will be back.

Pros: Amazing food, Beautiful peaceful environment, Lovely rooms

Cons: Price high, but still good value

Great Little Haven

Very impressed with the food and overall accommodations. Note that there are wool items for sale in the gift shop which was very disappointing.
